- Birds and crocodile watching
- Visit an island in the Andaman Sea to see a turtle hatchery
- Enjoy the scenic countryside.
Mainmahla Kyun (Mainmahla Island) is an island surrounded by mangrove forests in Myanmar’s southern Ayeyarwady delta. Here are opportunities to see the critically endangered saltwater crocodiles, long-tailed macaques, the Ayeyarwady dolphin, and over 100 species of birds. The island is famous for its crocodiles and the only place in the delta where we will see these breeding crocodiles.
One of the highlights of a visit to this area is the night safari to see the crocodiles. Another highlight is the fishing villages around Mainmahla Island. Residents here have many stories about the crocodiles and the protection of the fishermen by the ”U Shin Gyee” spirit shrine.
Day 1 : Yangon - Bogale - Mainmahla Island
Early in the morning (between 6 am and 7 am) we will start our 4-hour drive to the southern town of Bogale where we will have lunch at a good Myanmar restaurant. After lunch, we will take a 2-hour boat ride to Mainmahla Island and will pass by various kinds of mangrove, local villages, and see fishermen at work. We will check-in at the Freda Eco Lodge, which was built among the mangrove trees in the wildlife sanctuary on Byonemhwe Island. After a short rest at the lodge, we start a 2-hour boat tour along the channel to see the mangroves where we may spot crocodiles (it depends on the tide as the crocodiles are more easy to spot when the tide is very low). Back to the lodge where we overnight.
Day 2 : Explore Mainmahla Island
After breakfast, we will leave for bird watching. The boat driver will navigate around the many channels in the sanctuary and spend time among the biggest mangrove forests in Myanmar. Along the way we will have opportunities to see over 100 species of birds. We return to the lodge for lunch and afterwards we board the boat again to other parts of the sanctuary. We will hike on a long wooden bridge which is built through the mangrove forest. We also will visit a small fishermen’s village on Byonemwe Island. After sunset we return to the lodge. In the evening we go on a night safari to spot the crocodiles and then return to the lodge and overnight.
Day 3 : Explore Mainmahla Island
After breakfast we will go to other channels of Mainmahla Island. We will do kayaking for about one hour and visit the local traditional belief “U Shin Gyee” spirit shrine which is the most important spirit for the fishermen of Myanmar. Afterwards, we will return to the lodge for lunch and on the way back we can again visit the crocodile area and hope to see them if it is low tide. After lunch we continue with bird- and crocodile watching. We overnight again at the lodge.
Day 4 : Explore Mainmahla Island
After breakfast, we will take the boat to visit Ga Done Ga Ni which is a large fishermen’s village and then continue for about 2 hours to a turtle hatchery on an island in the Andaman Sea. We will have lunch in a house on the island and then visit another island with a fishing village about 30 minutes away. We will walk around on the island to meet the locals and to see a school. We return the turtle hatchery island to swim. After refreshments, we return to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Day 5 : Mainmahla Island - Bogale - Yangon
After breakfast, we will take our boat back to Bogale from where we drive to Yangon. The tour concludes at the Yangon International Airport or in downtown.
