Learn about Dawei Culture

It’s no secret that one of the most exciting things about visiting Myanmar is the chance to learn about the country’s rich and varied culture. With more than 135 recognized ethnic groups in Myanmar, there is a rich tapestry of traditions and culture.

One of those cultural groups is the Dawei, who (as you’d expect) live in the Dawei region of Myanmar. This group has a proud and rich history, and many of their own unique customs, cultural practices and beliefs.

When you visit Dawei, you can have the opportunity to learn about this culture all while supporting the communities in the local area. Through sustainable and respectful tourism, you can participate in genuine cultural exchange.

Activities like homestays and guided walks are wonderful things to do in Dawei, and allow you to learn about and experience the local culture.

Try traditional food

We’ve already mentioned the amazing seafood that’s on offer in and around Dawei. It’s scrumptiously fresh and prepared using traditional methods that make the flavors really shine. You definitely can’t miss a delicious seafood feast while visiting Dawei, Myanmar!

That’s just one of the amazing tastes on offer, however. As with all of Myanmar, you’ll find an abundance of delicious and unique dishes to try while in Dawei. Many of the best restaurants are humble in character, but offer up dishes to totally tantalize your tastebuds.

One of the best things about the cuisine in Dawei is that it’s also vegetarian-friendly. One popular dish is called Hlan Hlan Hnan, and we promise it will be one of the best salads you’ve ever tasted!

Enjoy a natural spa

Visiting Dawei is good for the soul – and it’s not just because of the beautiful beaches and warm and welcoming people (although that helps too!). Dawei also boasts many natural features that make it a natural spa.

The area around Dawei produces a sought-after natural skincare cream called Thanakha. You’ll find various places where you can give it a try, and even bring some home as a gift or souvenir.

Dawei is also home to a restorative ‘barefoot spa’. Here, you can enjoy the healing properties of plants and techniques that have been used in Myanmar for centuries. Visit some beautiful pagodas

Throughout all of Myanmar, you will see much evidence of the nation’s devotion to Buddhism – and Dawei is no exception. Throughout the area, there are many beautiful buildings that have been built as an expression of faith and culture. Exploring them is truly wonderful.

There’s Myaw Yit Pagoda, which is one of the most unique and picturesque in Myanmar (and there are many picturesque pagodas in Myanmar!). This gorgeous temple is located on a small island out from the south of Maungmagan Beach, and it’s one of the best places to go in Dawei.

There’s also the Shwe Thalyaung Pagoda with its beautiful reclining Buddha, along with Payagi, the main Buddhist Monastery which is also sometimes called simply the ‘Big Pagoda’.

Shop at the market

It’s great to visit many of the wonderful Dawei attractions, but it’s also fabulous to get a little slice of local life as well. Aside from visiting the pagodas, another way to walk in the shoes of a Dawei local is to swing by the market for a spot of shopping (and people watching!).

The main market in Dawei is the Si Pin Tharyar Zei market in town. This is where many local people buy their fresh fruit and vegetables, and you can try some delicious fresh snacks as well. If you’re lucky, you might even find zin thi, which is a special fruit that only grows around Dawei.

Near the market, you’ll also find vendors selling beautiful handicrafts. Don’t be afraid to do a little bit of haggling (always with a smile!) so that you can take home the perfect souvenir to remind you of all the amazing things you did in Dawei.

Pro Niti Travel is thrilled to offer excursions to Dawei, in conjunction with local communities. Our tours are authentic, exciting, and directly support local people through sustainable tourism. Lampi Marine National Park in Myeik (Mergui) Archipelago - A Paradise in Myanmar

Come to the pristine islands of the Myeik Archipelago and Lampi Island, in the Tanintharyi Region of southern Myanmar. Here you can explore Lampi Marine National Park. An oasis set in the Andaman Sea; it is a protected land rich in biodiversity. Lampi covers a group of islands thick with tropical evergreen rainforests and surrounded by an extensive coral reef system.

Even though the archipelago was officially opened to international tourists only in 1997, this area remains largely unexplored. Lampi Island has a rocky coastline, with beautiful sandy beaches, bays, and inlets. The park was declared an ASEAN Heritage Park in 2003. It protects dunes and beaches, evergreen and mangrove forests, seagrasses and coral reefs.

Since 2009 the Italian NGO Istituto Oikos supports the park staff in biodiversity conservation activities

Marine Habitats in Lampi

With the incredible coral reefs, seaweeds and seagrass beds, this area is a precious habitat for crustaceans, mollusks, urchins, and much other fish. These species are ecologically important and a source of food for local communities. Surrounding the islands are meadows of seagrass, which help sustain many of the threatened species here. Creatures such as the dugong, green sea turtle and a variety of birds make their home on the island.

The Local Population – The Sea Gypsies

The Moken are an indigenous population, arisen from the Malay people  They have been living in the Myeik archipelago for centuries and are nomadic – roaming from island to island – collecting and trading items gathered from the sea.

When the rainy season hits, they settle on islands that offer adequate shelter, particularly the forested areas that provide enough resources when the seas are to choppy to explore and draw from. They live in huts with stilts, built close to the shore so that they may keep their eye on their boats. During the dry season, they used to spend many months on their boats, gathering their wares. However, these days they tend to use smaller, dug-out canoes and keep closer to the shore during their fishing trips.

Sea gypsies Moken Myeik Archipelago

Today it is estimated that about 3,000 Moken still inhabit the archipelago, with about 400 living within Lampi National Park, in the villages of Nyaung Wee, Ko Phawt and Makyone Galet. Because of their low population, the Moken have never perceived their resources as limited. Yet they also believe that one should not take more than one needs for subsistence; they are not greedy.

As stewards of the sea, they are known for being exceptional divers – one way they make an income is by collecting sea cucumbers and low tide. As of late, the resources around the islands have become scarcer and the Moken have trouble competing with fishermen from nearby areas that have better equipment.

When to Visit to Lampi

The best time to visit this gorgeous group of islands is during the dry season, from October through May. December through March is the high season that gets the most visitors, with its hot and sunny weather by day and cool temperatures overnight.

Beautiful islands around Lampi Marine park

What You Will Find in the Park

With over a thousand species of animals, plants and marine life, many of which are globally protected, you will not want for an amazing array of fauna on the islands. Some of the 228 bird species including  4 that are listed as threatened.  Among them are the plain-pouched hornbill and the Wallace hawk-eagle.

In addition, there are 12  amphibians and 35  reptile species. There are three species of sea turtles. Of the 33species of mammals, 5  of them are threatened, according to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, including the dugong and the Sunda pangolin.

Things to Do in Lampi

Conservation in the area remains a focus, and in partnership with the local communities, visitors can explore Lampi Marine National Park by enjoying these activities:

Lampi National Marine Park

Hiking the Jungles. As there are not yet marked trails in the jungle, it is best to follow a park ranger or a local into the dense vegetation. A hike to the top of one of Lampi’s hills offers spectacular views where the rainforest meets the beach and the sea. Along the way, you will see reptiles, small mammals and birds.

Birdwatching. A birdwatcher’s paradise, Lampi has colonies of Plain-pouched hornbills that roost on Ko Phawt island. Hundreds of them can be viewed at sunrise or sunset, making for stunning photography.

Canoeing and Boating in the Mangroves. There are two rivers located on the western side of the main island, called the “crocodile” and “tourist” rivers. Take a canoe trip, surrounded by lush mangroves, which are home to a rich variety of birds and marine life. Or, you can board a long-tail boat and have a local take you to all of the best spots in Lampi National Park

Snorkeling and Diving. In several areas within the park, visitors can admire hard corals, coral fish, sea turtles, rays and perhaps even the elusive shark! Diving is mostly done outside of the park with professional, licensed agencies. Or get an organic experience and go fishing with the Moken, who will demonstrate their hunter-gatherer ways of using spears to collect fish, or diving for sea urchins with their bare hands.

Scuba Diving at Lampi park

Observing the sea turtles. The waters around Lampi have several sea turtle nesting sites. From January to March, one can observe tracks of egg-laying turtles and during the night it is possible to witness baby sea turtles hatching from their eggs and immediately escaping into the sea.

Visit with the Locals. Immerse yourself in Lampi’s life by visiting the Moken villages of Nyaung Wee and Makyone Galet. Meander along sandy beaches where their stilted huts reside and visit with local residents over fresh coconut water or traditional tea.

How to Get to Lampi Marine National Park

Lampi can be reached from either Thailand or Myanmar.

From Myanmar, the fastest way is by plane from Yangon to Kawthaung, which is a 3-hour flight, with stops in Dawei or Myeik. The cost is approximately USD250-300 round trip. From Kawthaung, board your pre-booked tourist boat to take you to Lampi for weekly cruise or one-day excursion starting from Kawthaung or from some licensed accommodation in the surrounding islands.

From Thailand, enter Myanmar at the Ranong border in a long-tailed boat which will take you to Kawthaung. This boat trip is about 15 minutes and costs approximately 250 Thai baht.

Myanmar Culture And How To Experience It

Myanmar is a country that offers an extraordinarily rich culture and history. Made up of many different groups offering their customs and traditions, yet united by some common threads, Myanmar’s culture is sure to enchant visitors.

The opportunity to show Myanmar culture to visitors is one of the main drivers and passions behind Pro Niti Travel. We believe in an authentic and respectful cultural exchange. Not only this is a learning experience that widens the horizons of visitors to Myanmar, but it can also lead to a more compassionate and understanding world.

So, whether you are just interested to learn more about culture in Myanmar and if you are planning a visit and would like to know how to experience it, this article will help serve as an introduction!

About Myanmar Culture

Describing Myanmar’s culture is not easy because many different cultural groups have shaped our national identity. But let’s take a closer look at some critical areas of Myanmar’s culture.

A (very) brief history of Myanmar

The history of Myanmar spans at least 2,300 years – and probably far more. By at least 300 BC, a rich civilization existed in the south of Myanmar, known to and respected internationally. Over the next few hundred years, the civilization expanded north, covering much of what we now know as Myanmar.

In 849, the city of Pagan was founded, and it would grow to be one of the most powerful. Two hundred years later, the country was united, and soon after the First Burmese Empire began.

The empire grew, and the 13th Century is considered the Golden Age for the realm. However, it would eventually decline, and the country was splintered again. Over the next several years, there were numerous conflicts and successes, including the Second Burmese Empire.

In the mid- to late- 1800’s, the British gradually gained control of the country then known as Burma. This occupation would last for about one hundred years until Myanmar gained its full independence in 1948.

Many historical events have shaped Myanmar and its culture. In particular, the fact that many different ethnic and social groups have been a part of the rich history has influenced the diversity that is still seen today.

How to experience the history of Myanmar

It is difficult for one to go to Myanmar but not experience the history of Myanmar! It is genuinely found all over the country, and you will have ample opportunity to learn more about Myanmar’s past.

One particularly unmissable place for history lovers is the stunning city of Bagan, with its hundreds of historic pagodas.

Religion

Myanmar has no officially stated religion, and there is diversity throughout the country. However, the most common faith in Myanmar is Buddhism, and it has strongly influenced the culture and customs of the country. Myanmar is considered the holiest Buddhist nation on earth, with Buddhism which has been prosperously present for over 2,000 years.

It is estimated that more than 85% of Myanmar’s population practices Theravada Buddhism. This belief is based on the dhamma, or teachings of Buddha. These teachings help people to achieve enlightenment of life and shape many of the customs and traditions in Myanmar.

While you are in Myanmar, you are likely to see Monks dressed in their distinct robes. Most boys in Myanmar will enter a monastery to live as a novice monk for a period of their life. Overall, Monks are treated with great respect in Myanmar.

Another way that Buddhism has influenced Myanmar’s culture is the existence of many religious festivals throughout the year. These often have deep spiritual significance but are also joyous occasions filled with cultural performances.

While Buddhism is one of the most significant influences on Myanmar, there is evidence that a different type of spirituality preceded it. This spirituality revolved around the worship of Indigenous spirits known as nats, and you can still see evidence of the influence of this spirituality today.

Also, there are many other religions practiced in Myanmar. Islam, Christianity, and Hinduism are all represented in Myanmar, as well.

How to experience religion in Myanmar

Visiting Myanmar is likely to be a profoundly spiritual and significant experience, no matter what your beliefs are. There is something incredibly moving about visiting pagodas and seeing the devotion of people, and learning more about the teachings of Buddhism.

With more than 2,000 temples in Bagan alone, including the beautiful Shwesandaw Pagoda, you are almost sure to get an opportunity to experience this for yourself.

The arts (visual art, dance, music)

The arts have long been an essential part of Myanmar culture like much of the country; it has been influenced by religion and migration. As a result, the arts in Myanmar are diverse and plentiful.

Several art forms are traditional in Myanmar, and many people still create beautiful works using traditional methods passed down through the generations. One of the most popular types of art in Myanmar is using concrete mostly to decorate elaborate and beautiful pagodas. Other famous traditional techniques, including woodworking, bronze casting, and lacquer-ware.

Traditional music and dances tend to vary from group to group and are often performed at festivals including the Naga New Year. One common way to play music in Myanmar is as part of a hsaing waing, a traditional orchestra with instruments including gongs and drums. Other devices, such as the conventional harp saung-gauk (thought to be the oldest style of the harp in Asia) may also be included in the hsaing waing or performed separately.

How to experience art in Myanmar

It is a fascinating and memorable experience to see the arts in Myanmar. One of the best ways to see this element of Myanmar culture is to attend a traditional festival, where you are likely to experience traditional dance, music, food, and costumes. Luckily, Myanmar has many festivals – so you have a good chance of being able to see one during your visit.

Another way to experience the arts in Myanmar is to visit a traditional artisan. This will allow you to see the process of creating art and also take home a beautiful and authentic souvenir from a true artist.

Cuisine

Food is, of course, an essential part of any culture – and Myanmar is no exception! Food is not only for nourishment but also something that is shared with family, friends, and during festivals.

Like much of Myanmar’s culture, the cuisine has been overwhelmed by many different ethnic groups and does vary a little depending on the region you visit. In particular, you are likely to notice a difference between the cuisine in-land and the cuisine on the coast.

Overall, Myanmar’s cuisine has been heavily influenced by Indian, Thai, and Chinese styles of cooking – as well as local produce. Some common dishes include mohinga, a delicious rice noodle and fish soup that is often eaten at breakfast (although we won’t judge if you have it for every meal!), and nangyi thoke, a flavorsome noodle-based salad which is served with an accompanying soup.

Where to experience Myanmar’s cuisine

Don’t worry – if you visit Myanmar, you are sure to have the opportunity to experience delicious traditional food. Although there are some multicultural restaurants in Myanmar, there are still many, many places serving traditional dishes – from small street food stalls to upscale restaurants.

If you are traveling as a part of a tour, then your guide will certainly be able to help you find some high-quality, authentic Myanmar cuisine to enjoy. You may even like to try your hand at a cooking class, or purchase some authentic ingredients from the market!

Customs

Another important part of Myanmar culture is traditions and customs. Again, these do vary quite a lot around the country, but there are some commonalities that you might experience when visiting!

In general, Buddhist teachings has influenced society in Myanmar. One particularly important matter is to have respect for others, especially elders. Older people and Buddhist monks are treated with a great deal of respect in Myanmar.

Some concepts in Myanmar do not translate comfortably to English, such as the ideas of ana and hpon. “Ana” refers to the idea of saving face – in Myanmar, it is considered a very poor form to raise your voice or become angry. As a result, you will likely find people in Myanmar to be very polite and respectful. In fact, people in Myanmar are generally extremely kind and hospitable.

While people in Myanmar – and especially in the cities – are quite accepting, it is a good rule of thumb to dress modestly and avoid public displays of affection. This is especially the case at religious sites, where your show of respect will be appreciated.

Similarly, it’s a good idea to be aware of a few good manners in Buddhism – in particular, touching someone on the head or pointing at them with your feet is considered very rude! If in doubt, your guide can always help you to be aware of any cultural matters.

How to experience customs in Myanmar

As these customs are very much a way of modern life in Myanmar, you will almost certainly experience them while visiting! To learn more about traditional culture and ways of life, then visiting more remote or rural communities is an incredible experience. Pro Niti Travel is proud to support community-based tourism and can help to foster connections so you can learn more about customs in Myanmar.

5 Things you can do in Myanmar that will make your trip special

If you’re traveling to South East Asia, the first places that come to mind are surely Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia. Years of isolation have meant that many people haven’t incorporated Myanmar into their itineraries, but they should change that. Myanmar is made up of over 100 ethnic groups, each with its customs, traditions, and even languages – so it goes without saying that the country has a rich and diverse culture.

That’s not all though, Myanmar is full of natural beauty – tropical rainforests, paradise beaches, and rolling hills are home to ancient temples and pagodas, just waiting for you to discover them. In this article, we’ll look at five things you can do in this beautiful country to make your trip special.

Marvel at the golden pagodas of Myanmar’s largest city, Yangon

Myanmar is often referred to as the land of the pagodas, and there’s nowhere better to start sightseeing these fascinating Buddhist monuments than the former capital, Yangon. It’s home to some of the most famous temples in the country, and no trip is complete without seeing these stunning buildings. The oldest, Shwedagon, Botahtaung, and Sule, are thought to date back over 2,500 years.

The structures have been built on and enlarged over the years to the point where the best-known, Shwedagon, is 99 meters tall! Thanks to its hilltop location, it’s visible from most of Yangon and attracts thousands of pilgrims every year. Watching the sunrise over Shwedagon is a real bucket list experience that shouldn’t be missed!

Of course, there’s more to see in Yangon than the incredible pagodas. Kandawgyi Park is a peaceful spot to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city while trying Yangon’s street food will surely tantalize your taste buds! We especially recommend the tasty skewers and samosas!

An unforgettable way to take in the sights and sounds of Yangon from above is the Mingalabar Balloon – a helium balloon that rises 400 feet above the city during good weather. Maybe sit this one out if you’re afraid of heights though!

Visit Mandalay, the capital of the last Myanmar Dynasty

Another former royal capital of Myanmar, Mandalay is a charming city that has risen from the ashes after being all but destroyed during World War II. The perfect way to arrive in Mandalay is on a relaxing cruise along the Irrawaddy River from Bagan, where you can enjoy the sights and sounds of the river, while hopefully spotting some wildlife on the banks too!

Once in Mandalay, there are several things to see and do that will enable you to learn about the history of the royal capital. We’d recommend climbing the covered stairway to the top of Mandalay Hill which provides excellent panoramic views of the city, especially at sunset. Before ascending, stop at the Kuthodaw Paya, which is also known as the world’s most famous book!

Aside from the temples, Mandalay is a friendly and welcoming city. The perfect way to get to know the locals is by popping into one of the city’s many tea houses – there’s a thriving culture dedicated to the leafy beverage here!

Have a wildlife adventure on Meinmahla Island

So far, we’ve looked at two cities. And while Myanmar’s vibrant cities are full of architectural and religious treasures and welcoming people, sometimes you want to be miles away from the hustle and bustle of a city. Something that is bound to be an unforgettable experience is a trip to Meinmahla Island, where there are opportunities to see some of Myanmar’s native wildlife.

The highlight of a visit to this beautiful island is undoubtedly a night safari where you can go in search of the critically endangered saltwater crocodile. One of the world’s most potent and terrifying reptiles isn’t all that you can get your camera shutter clicking for though – keep your eyes peeled for the Ayeyarwady river dolphin, cute long-tailed macaques, and over 100 species of bird!

As well as searching for wildlife, it’s a great idea to devote some time to visit the local fishing villages. They’re sure to regale you with plenty of stories about the saltwater crocs and how the spirit of U Shin Gyee protects the local fishermen.

Meet local tribes and learn about their culture and customs

So, in the Meinmahla Islands, you can meet the generous and welcoming locals who will share stories of their cultures and traditions with you. They’re just one of over 100 ethnic groups that call Myanmar their home, and no-one should leave Myanmar without getting to know the country’s rich and fascinating culture on a deeper level.

Myanmar is home to many tribes that still live their traditional experience, and it is possible to visit and get to know their culture and ways of life. Not only is this a once in a lifetime experience, but it’s also a responsible form of tourism as you’re supporting a tribe in maintaining their identity.

Tribes here are welcoming and accommodating to foreigners, although it should be noted that they will expect you to respect their customs. Do be considerate and always ask before taking a photo. It’s also a good idea to come bearing a small gift and learn a couple of simple words as a sign of respect. This will be an unforgettable part of your trip.

Immerse yourself in the swimming and snorkeling paradise of the Mergui Archipelago

The Mergui Archipelago spent years untouched by tourism and is one of the world’s best-kept secrets when it comes to marine biodiversity! However, you can be one of the few people to experience this beautiful part of Myanmar, should you wish to.

The azure blue waters lap against the white sand beaches of over 100 uninhabited islands off Myanmar’s southern coast, many covered by dense and rich jungle vegetation.

As well as incredible wildlife and biodiversity, the indigenous Moken people live on the Mergui Archipelago. Known as the sea gypsies or sea nomads, seeing their way of life is the icing on the cake when it comes to this incredible experience!

Independent, Private or Small Group Tour: How to Travel in Myanmar

Once you’ve made the decision that you want to visit amazing Myanmar, you’ll probably start looking at your different options for traveling through the country. Nowadays, there are many different options to suit all travel styles and budgets – but what is the best way to travel in Myanmar?

Today we’ll compare the three main options – traveling independently, privately or with a small group tour. We’ll take a look at the pros and cons of each option, to figure out how to travel in Myanmar in the best way possible.

How to travel in Myanmar: the options

We understand that every traveler is different, and what works for one person may not be the best option for someone else. However, with years of experience taking guests through our beautiful country, we do have some experience in how to travel in Myanmar!

Myanmar is a safe country filled with warm, friendly people and amazing cultural, natural and historic attractions. However you choose to explore the country, you are sure to have an incredible time discovering all of its wonderful sights and attractions.

Independent travel

Independent travel means taking the “DIY” approach to travel and forging your own path. From booking flights to navigating the bustling streets of Yangon, you’ll be the one solely in charge. For many travelers, this independence is exhilarating — but for some others, it can be stressful.

The main benefit of independent travel is the total flexibility it provides. You can take each day by the horns, determining your own itinerary and making last minute changes. If you’re the kind of person who likes to travel without a plan and make it up as you go along, then independent travel may suit you perfectly.

Independent travel can also offer a lot of flexibility when it comes to budget. You can easily devise your own budget and stick to it, whether that means staying in simple hostels or living lavishly at luxury boutique hotels.

On the other hand, there are some drawbacks of independent travel. As you are the one totally in charge, you’ll also need to respond to any issues or problems that arise, like last minute flight cancellations or road closures. You also might find yourself with questions about where you’re visiting, that can’t be answered by a local (or even Google!)

In addition, some travelers also find it more difficult to connect with local culture when traveling independently, as there may be language barriers or cultural considerations you are not aware of. Similarly, some people find independent travel to be on the lonely side, especially if you are traveling alone.

One option may be to combine some independent travel with shorter tours, offering the best of both worlds. At Pro Niti Travel, our tours start from just two days, so can easily be combined with a few days (or weeks!) of independent adventuring.

Summary – pros and cons of independent travel in Myanmar

Pros

  • Total independence – you can change your itinerary at the last minute
  • Budget flexibility
  • Great if you enjoy your own company and alone time

Cons

  • It can be stressful responding to unexpected issues and problems
  • The language barrier and cultural differences can make the cultural exchange more difficult
  • It can be lonely to travel on your own
  • Nobody to ask questions about local sites or customs

Small-Group Travel

Small Group travel is where you travel as part of a group, usually filled with other travelers from all around the world. Group travel tours are almost always led by a guide — we’re very proud of our friendly and professional local guides, who lead our small group adventures.

There are many reasons that group travel is one of the best ways to see Myanmar. You’ll have the benefit of a tour guide, who can help you learn about local culture and customs. As local guides speak the local language and have many local connections, they can help introduce you to local people and communities. You may have experienced during group adventures that are not available to you if you travel independently.

Another benefit of group travel is the “ready-made” group of friends accompanying you. Even if you are traveling on your own, you’ll soon have plenty of people to talk to! Many people make lifelong friends on small group tours, and you may find yourself with friendships all over the world! Best of all, you’ll always have these friends to reminisce with and talk about your experience in Myanmar.

As you are traveling with a group, small group tours can also be very budget-friendly, travel with like-minded people, especially when compared to a group tour. You may even find that small group tours are better valued than traveling independently, as tour operators often have access to special deals and discounts.

Yet another reason why small group travel is a favorite among many travelers is the peace of mind and convenience. Rather than going at it alone if you travel independently, you’ll have on-the-ground-expert taking care of all of the logistics. This means you’ll spend far less time planning and navigating through the practicalities, and more time being amazed by the wonders of Myanmar.

Along a similar vein, many people appreciate the peace of mind that comes with the safety of group tours. Although Myanmar is a very safe country, there are scams and risks in all places, and traveling as a group with a local expert can help ensure you and your property stay totally safe.

As you can see, there are many great reasons to choose a small group tour in Myanmar. There are, however, a couple of downsides that are worth considering. Traveling as part of a group does mean giving up some flexibility, as there will usually be set departure dates and itineraries.

We put careful consideration into our itineraries to try to make them as varied and enjoyable as possible, but there is a bit of compromise that can come with group travel. You might find stops that aren’t 100% your cup of tea, or on the other hand, wish you’d had more time to spend somewhere.

In addition, not all group tours were created equal! Unfortunately, some tours are prone to overbooking, which can mean you are part of a large group. While some travelers enjoy this, many find that it makes it hard to ask questions and get one-on-one attention. That’s why we recommend looking for tour providers (like us!) that keep group sizes small.

In order to ensure the best experience during your group tour in Myanmar, we recommend carefully researching both the company and the itinerary. A good quality tour operator that offers itineraries that suit your interests and travel dates will go a long way to ensuring that you have the best possible time on your tour. Did we mention that Pro Niti Tours recently started our own small group adventures?

Summary – pros and cons of group travel in Myanmar

Pros

  • Presents excellent value for money
  • Stress-free — let the experts take care of the logistics while you have fun
  • Safety and security
  • The opportunity for genuine cultural exchange
  • The possibility of making new friends all over the world

Cons

  • Large group sizes may mean a lack of individual attention
  • Less flexibility than other options

Private tours

A private tour is where you have a guide, and usually a driver, just for you and (if applicable) your group. Your group can be as few or as many as you like – perhaps just you on a fabulous solo adventure, or a big group of friends and family. However many you are, the main thing is that you’ve got a guide all to yourself!

For many people, private tours offer the best of both worlds as compared to independent travel or group travel. Like with group travel, private tours offer the opportunity to immerse yourself in another culture. A good local guide will be able to help you to learn more about local culture and customs, due to their understanding of the local language, as well as connections to local communities.

In addition, private tours offer the same peace of mind and convenience — taking all the hard work planning off of your hands, so that you can simply sit back and enjoy your amazing holiday in Myanmar.

Unlike group tours, one of the main benefits of a private tour is that you have significant flexibility. While most group tours are fixed packages, private tours can be altered and crafted to fit your exact interests and requirements. In addition, it allows you to go at your own pace once you arrive; perhaps fit in a slower start or pack your day full of fun adventures. The choice is yours, and yours alone.

While there are many benefits to private tours, the major drawback is that this does generally come at a cost. Although even private tours can offer excellent value (thanks to the expertise and connections of tour operators), they do tend to come in at a bit higher cost than group tours and independent travel. If you’re on a tight budget, then private tours may not be the ideal option.

That said, the flexibility does mean that tour operator can often work with you and your budget to find a workable solution. Pro Niti Travel is proud to offer all different tours to suit different interests and budgets – and we love tailoring them so they’re the perfect tour for you. Why not take a look at our private Myanmar tour packages, or contact us with your queries?

Summary – pros and cons of independent travel in Myanmar

Pros

  • Flexibility over your itinerary and other matters
  • Stress-free — let the experts take care of the logistics while you have fun
  • Safety and security
  • The opportunity for genuine cultural exchange
  • Plenty of time for individual attention, and questions!

Cons

  • May not be ideal for travelers on tight budgets
  • Less chance to meet other travelers

Conclusion: what is the best way to travel in Myanmar?

As you can see, there are numerous options for traveling in Myanmar. As for which is the best option — that will largely depend on you, and your interests and requirements! Pro Niti Travel is proud to help organize both private tours and small group adventures – why not take a look?

Why You Should Choose A Local Myanmar Travel Agency

If you’re looking at planning an incredible adventure to Myanmar, chances are you’ve started looking at travel agencies and tour providers. You might be wondering whether to choose a large international operator or a smaller local Myanmar travel agency.

Some visitors have some concerns about choosing a local Myanmar travel agency over an international company. You might recognize some of the bigger names and think that it will be easier to go with them. However, we believe that there are many good reasons why going local can help make your trip even more special.

Here are some great reasons why you should choose a local Myanmar travel agency, and how to make sure you choose the perfect company.

We love Myanmar

Most international tour companies run tours all over the world, or at least all over Asia. This means that their efforts and enthusiasm are spread out over many different destinations. While we’re sure they really do love Myanmar (it’s hard not to!), they are not focussed only on it.

Local Myanmar travel agencies like Pro Niti Travel, by contrast, love Myanmar and only offer tours around our country. We absolutely adore showing visitors around and helping them to experience the Myanmar we know and love. It is our privilege to help make your dream Myanmar experience a reality.

Local knowledge

Similarly, because we are locals, we know all of the little secret gems that are not usually found in guidebooks or huge tours. We have spent our whole lives in Myanmar, and this has given us the knowledge of our country and all it has to offer. From bustling local markets to tiny hole-in-the-wall family restaurants, we know so many special places that we can share with you.

It’s not just the places and attractions that we know about, either. We also grew up immersed in the culture and customs of Myanmar, hearing stories about life in Myanmar now and in the past. We can authentically share these experiences with you so that you will have a more genuine and enriching experience.

We also love answering your questions and helping you get the most out of your stay in Myanmar. As we know so much about our country, we will be thrilled to share it with you!

The personalized approach

Major international tour operators see thousands and thousands of travelers every year, as they head off to destinations all over the world. Most local tour operators are much smaller, meaning that we get to know and remember every guest who travels with us. We pride ourselves on treating all of our guests like friends.

Small, local travel operators are generally in the tourism industry because they love Myanmar and tourism – at least that’s definitely the case with Pro Niti Travel! We genuinely enjoy getting to know all of our guests and helping to personalize their experience in Myanmar.

Because we are a small, hands-on team – we have the time and the flexibility to do this. From helping add extra fun stops to your itinerary to chatting to you about your life and interests, we make sure everyone has a personalized experience.

Keep the tourist spending in Myanmar

One issue with large international tour companies is that often a large portion of their profits leave Myanmar. While some tour operators do employ local guides, a large amount of the fees paid for the tour are still likely to leave the country. This can limit the amount of economic benefit that Myanmar sees from such tours.

You may be aware that Myanmar is a country where many people are living in the poverty cycle, or struggling to find economic opportunity. By supporting local tour operators, there is a flow-on effect as we then support local businesses and employ local people. Plus, all of those people then continue to spend their money in Myanmar.

Some organizations, like Pro Niti Travel, even take it a step further and provide philanthropic support to community development organizations.

Some tips for safety and trust

Some visitors to Myanmar may be concerned about the safety and security of using a smaller tour company. We are pleased to assure you that there are many ways that you can ensure that a local Myanmar travel agency is trustworthy.

One of the best ways to determine this is to look at the company’s past reviews. Nowadays with TripAdvisor and Google Reviews, it is so easy to take a look at other travelers’ experiences.

You can also look at the company’s membership of professional bodies. Membership of these groups shows a commitment to providing industry-leading, high-quality services. Some groups in Myanmar include:

Finally, have a browse of the operator’s website and ask questions if you have them. This kind of communication will give you a real feel for the operator and their approach. Trust your instincts, and choose a local Myanmar travel agency that you feel confident about.

With all this in mind, you are sure to have an amazing, authentic experience in beautiful Myanmar.
