Itinerary

Discover 9 days in the land of glittering pagodas to experience the diverse ethnic groups’ culture and traditions. This will be a great experience to those interested in the local way of life of Myanmar’s many ethnic groups. Ancient city ruins will definitely be a part of this memorable trip.

Your Myanmar Classic Adventure tour will start with exploring the Burmese and colonial architecture in downtown Yangon, including the splendid Shwedagon Pagoda. We then move to the historic town of Bagan to enjoy the archaeological sites with hundreds of temples and pagodas.

We will also visit the centre of Burmese culture in Mandalay, the capital of the last Myanmar Dynasty. Observe artists at a traditional arts and crafts workshop, and enjoy an amazing sunset at the world’s longest teakwood bridge (U Bein) and also from the hill of Mandalay.

Next is Shan State for boating on Inle Lake and cycling around the interesting town of Nyaung Shwe. We will even do some wine tasting at a local winery.

Day 1 : Arrival and explore Yangon

We welcome you to the golden land of Myanmar to start your classic adventure. Upon arrival at the airport, our guide will welcome you and drive into the city where your journey starts at the Botahtaung Pagoda, one of the most significant temple-type pagodas in Yangon. We then visit an Art Gallery at the famous Strand Hotel and then take a stroll through the streets of downtown to see the stately colonial buildings dating from the British era. Next is the Sule Pagoda, City Hall, High Court and the Independence monument in Mahabandoola Park. Enjoy your shopping at Bogyoke Aung San Market, the best place to explore Myanmar’s traditional arts and crafts, gems and clothing. It’s time to taste Myanmar food so our guide will bring us to the best restaurant in Yangon. We will continue our visit to Chauk Htet Kyi Reclining Buddha, the third largest in Myanmar and go to walk around Kandawgyi Park and take pictures of Karaweik Hall and get a distant view of the Shwedagon Pagoda. It is the time for the masterpiece of your first day in Myanmar so let’s go inside the Grand Shwedagon Pagoda in the evening for the most picturesque experience. Later in the evening, we return to our hotel.

We will fly to Bagan today. On arrival, our journey begins with a visit to a local colourful market where villagers gather every day to buy and sell their products and other goods. Continue your journey with a visit to the golden stupa of Shwezigon Pagoda for an introduction to Bagan’s rich history. We will visit nearby Wetkyi-In Gubyaukgyi Temple with exquisite Jataka mural paintings, the elegant Htilominlo Temple noted for its fine plaster carvings and glazed sandstone decorations. Lunch at a restaurant and then transfer to your hotel to take a rest of 1-2 hours. This afternoon, our Myanmar adventure begins with a visit to Ananda Temple, an architectural masterpiece which is one of the Bagan’s most beautiful temples built in the early Mon-Myanmar style. Ananda contains two unique Buddha images and its expressions seem to change depending on the distance from which the statue is viewed. From here we travel by horse cart to Thatbyinnyu Temple, the highest temple in Bagan and the massive Dhammayangyi Temple noted for its remarkable brickwork. Enjoy an unforgettable sunset over the plains from Nyaung Lat Phet Hill. Back to the hotel for overnight.

Today we will visit the rural village of Minnanthu, one of the places where you can see cotton weaving and harvesting of the crops. This will be our starting point to explore Bagan’s famous temples such as the Laymyathnar Monastery Complex, Phayathonsu Temple, and Nandamannya with its mural paintings from the 13th century. We will bring you to one of the best local restaurants in Bagan for lunch and back to the hotel for a break of about 1-2 hours. Later this afternoon, we start with a visit to Myinkabar village where you can observe a traditional lacquerware workshop for the production of one of Myanmar’s best-known handicraft. Our journey continues to Manuha Temple with its huge Buddha images, Nanpaya Temple built with sandstone, and Gubyauk Gyi Temple (Myinkaba) where you can see colorful mural paintings. In the late afternoon, to catch the sunset, we will make our journey to the jetty for a slow boat cruise down the Ayeyarwaddy River. As we cruise downstream, we will see fishermen and riverside villages as well as a different view of Bagan’s temples. Later we return to the hotel for overnight.

Today we head to the last Myanmar Kingdom’s city, Mandalay, to explore more ancient cities of Myanmar. On arrival in Mandalay, we will start by visiting Mahargandar Yon Monastery where we can see the daily life of monks and novice monks studying the Buddha scriptures. Afterwards we travel to Ava (Innwa) where some of the highlights include the 27-meter-high masonry watchtower, Nan Myint (known as the “Leaning Tower of Innwa”), the Bagaya Monastery built with 276 teakwood pillars, and also observe a Myanmar tradition alms bowls workshop. We may do some travel in the area by horse cart.  After lunch, we will visit the holy Sagaing Hill, the hub of Buddhism in Myanmar. We will drive to Amarapura for a romantic sunset at the famous U Bein Bridge, made of teak logs and planks over 200 years ago by Mayor U Bein. We will drive back to our hotel in Mandalay.

Our Mandalay sightseeing starts today by visiting a landmark of Mandalay, the Maha Muni Pagoda, famous for its large golden Buddha image. We then will visit some arts and crafts workshops such as a stucco, tapestry, and a hand-made gold-leaf workshop, and then to a local Myanmar food restaurant for lunch.  After lunch, we start at the northeast corner of Mandalay Palace. We will visit the Shwenandaw Kyaung, an impressive wooden monastery which once was part of the Mandalay Palace. Our adventure continues with a visit to Kuthodaw Paya, more commonly known as the “world’s biggest book”. The slabs of marble are inscribed with the entire Tipitaka Buddhist scriptures. We will go up to the top of Mandalay Hill from where we can enjoy a birds-eye view of Mandalay and hopefully a beautiful sunset. We again overnight in Mandalay.

We will fly from Mandalay to Heho airport and on arrival proceed to Pindaya by car (about a 2-hr drive). On the way, we will see the beautiful Shan mountain range and many farms and villages. After lunch at a local restaurant, we will visit the Pindaya Caves, a natural cave decorated with thousands of small Buddha images. We will visit a small family-run umbrella making shop and then continue to Nyaung Shwe near the shores of Inle Lake (about a 2:30 hr drive). Overnight in Nyaung Shwe.

After breakfast at the hotel, Inle Lake sightseeing will include the floating islands, Heya Ywama Village, Phaung Daw Oo Phaya, and the unique leg-rowers and their traditional style of fishing. We will visit local family workshops including a silversmith, cheroot making, and weaving by the “long-neck” Padaung women.  Lunch will be at a local restaurant for Inthar style meals. On the way to Indein Village there will be many opportunities to photograph the activities on and around the lake. We will visit the areas around Indein Village and the ancient Shwe Indein Pagoda.  Overnight in Nyaung Shwe.

While Inle Lake is famous, there are many interesting villages to explore around the lake. Today we will do a bicycle tour around the lake. We will leave Inle Lake in the morning and embark at Nyaung Shwe for biking around the villages and the ancient Shwe Yan Pay Monastery. Let’s have a nice local meal for lunch, and then bike to the eastern part of the lake to explore more villages and the Red Mountain Winery, a great place for wine tasting. Later in the day we fly back to Yangon where we will overnight.

If you are flying out of Myanmar today, our driver will transfer you to the Yangon International Airport for your departure flight.
